The Ballroom Thieves have consistently and skillfully crossed genres, joining artists like Caamp, Langhorne Slim and Shakey Graves to bridge the gap between folk, rock, and soul. The New England Americana trio's catalog has amassed over 85 million streams and they’ve gained a loyal live following, selling out shows and earning festival spots at Boston Calling, Newport Folk, Moon River, Mountain Jam, and Calgary Folk. Darlingside has long been praised for their harmonies and intelligent songwriting, described by NPR as “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop,” and their dynamic presence (crowded tightly together onstage) have made them a live-performance favorite. How much of this is folk, pop or chamber-rock is really rather irrelevant. They are often described as a modern hybrid of CSN&Y and Simon & Garfunkel, but Darlingside are smarter and odder than both and surely no longer deserve to be labeled by the comparisons. Above and beyond the comparisons with other groups it’s only an attempt to put up a signpost that points in their direction. Because Darlingside are unique. They’re a gestalt of four voices and instruments that blend so perfectly it’s impossible (unnecessary) to single out individual contributions. Who is singing when and where is sacrificed for the superiority of the song at that moment. It’s democratic but also selfless.
